The colony's population increases significantly throughout the
19th Century, despite very little immigration after 1821, and
the emigration of a number of Métis families to hunting sites
in the Western Plain.
In 1870, the colony has more than 12,000 inhabitants, largely
composed of Métis, and stretches more than one hundred kilometres
from North to South along the Red River, and the same distance
to the West along the Assiniboine.
