Today's Farms

As we enter a new millennium, much uncertainty surrounds Manitoba farming. The family-run farm seems under particular threat in this time of globalization and market dominance by vast agri-food businesses. To take over the running of a farm has been and is a huge challenge for recent generations of French-speaking Manitoba farmers.

Agriculture seems to be at a crossroads, with a choice of two directions or approaches: either very large-scale farming, the mega-farm growing crops or raising livestock destined for a mass consumer market, or the so-called alternative farm, modest in size, with the opportunity to sell to limited and specialized markets. Such farms spurn the use of fertilizers, pesticides and biotechnology, in the name of protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity.
