The Barnabé Farm
Mr. Hervé Barnabé and son Alain
Farmers
Lettelier, Manitoba
Father:
Floods have always been good for the farm. Now, for those farmers
living in houses that got flooded, that's not the same at all.
But floodwater is good for the land, it leaves really good deposits.
Son:
Once it dries out, in you go and you'll get a good harvest. The
crops can be pretty late, depending on the year, and that gets
worrisome, you're in a hurry at harvest time. And the water takes
a long time to disappear. But we've never really lost a crop...
Father:
Never, not even in 97.
But the fields get all full of trees that you have to go and clean
up.
Son:
And garbage (washed down) from the neighbours...
Wife:
In 79, the house hadn't been moved up on to a little hill. We
had water all through the first floor, about a foot of water.
Just try cleaning that up afterwards, good luck! The linoleum
was all covered in mud.
