Modern Farms: Alternative Farms

EMEU VILLE
Mr. Cyril Durand
Ile des Chenes, Manitoba

My wife and I wanted to run our own business and at the beginning of the 90s, emus were just beginning to catch on in Manitoba. So that was one thing we looked at, and after we had done some research into the advantages of raising emus, we decided that emus would probably be a real good alternative as a business and a very big change from our usual careers. Now, raising emus, in one way it was pretty difficult at first, because no market had been developed. We had to get information out about our products, and that actually took quite a few years. The farm developed gradually; at first we sold oils and creams, as well as the meat, and bit by bit we also moved into handicrafts, with the eggs, the feathers, the leather; and now, there's an interest among tourists. We're looking to expand that side of the business a lot, because as well as just attracting tourists, there's an educational aspect; the people don't just come to look at the emu, they learn all about the birds!
