The ability to access profitable windows of opportunity has prompted
some Manitoba farmers to diversify their production and broaden
the traditional gamut of farm animals and crops. For example,
some producers raise ostriches, lamas, emus, wild boar, and bison,
and grow mustard seed, lentils, canary seed, and dried peas. Biological
farms and tourist farms are also components of this diversification.
Alternative farms aim at reducing the burden on natural resources
and, as such, adhere to strict environmental requirements.
