18 million acres of prairie are under cultivation, growing first
quality wheat, oats, barley and rye. Farms are becoming increasingly
diversified to meet the growing demand for special crops. Fields
of sunflowers are an important source of vegetable oils. The extensive
sugar beet industry yields 70 million pounds of refined sugar
each year. 30% of gross farm revenue comes from the sale of livestock
which fattens on the rich southern plains. 26000 acres yield a
potato crop worth 9 million dollars annually. Modern farm machinery
is streamlining harvest operations and revolutionizing farm production.
The province's direct agricultural output is worth more than 468
million dollars a year. Mechanization and automation are reflected
in every sphere of business and industry, increasing the demand
for technically trained personnel.
