The principal mission of the Manitoba Agricultural College, founded
in 1906, was to educate new farmers and provide scientific information
to established producers.
There were courses in such traditional areas as horticulture,
growing practices, animal husbandry and agricultural engineering.
However, in support of early moves towards applying commercial
principles to agriculture, the College also gave courses in farm
management, accounting and economics.
To get information out to established farmers, the Better Farming
Trains operated from 1912 until 1914; scientific knowledge was
put into layman's terms and small demonstration packages were
developed. In addition, there was a Domestic Science department,
offering women courses in nutrition, textiles, physiology, health
and institutional management. As well, the College was a centre
for research and experimentation; it remains today a leader in
agricultural research.
