Traditionally in Manitoba agriculture, large-scale
grain farming predominated. The drop in wheat prices, and the
availability of new, specialized crops, adapted to the Manitoba
climate, contributed to increased diversification in the 1980s
and 1990s. Although cereal crops are still dominant, fields of
canola, peas, lentils, flax and potatoes, to name just a few,
now form part of the landscape of the province. Moreover, more
producers are turning towards raising cattle and hogs.
