Farmers are in a constant struggle against weeds.
The rich, fertile soils of Manitoba allow these troublesome plants
to flourish at the expense of the crop that was planted.
Weeds compete with a crop for water and minerals, reducing the crop's
capacity for photosynthesis. When weed seeds are found in the harvested
grain, its final quality is lessened. Research into growing practices
and new biological or chemical weed control is constantly being
undertaken to limit the impact of these opportunistic plants.
