The devastating flood of 1950 led to the development of a plan
designed to provide protection from further damage. Some 110 kilometres
of dikes and 31 pumping stations were built. In 1968, the Red
River floodway was completed; it protected Winnipeg during the
major floods of 1979 and 1997. The size and severity of the 1997
flood led to its being called "flood of the century.
Despite the measures that have been taken to control high water
levels on the Red, southern Manitoba is an area where the risk
of flooding is still high.
