Colonization : Canadian Expansion

Soon after the Canadian Confederation, the federal government purchases Rupertsland and the Northwest Territories and opens them up to agriculture. From 1871-72 on, the land is divided into townships of 36 square miles (92 km2) each. The townships are further divided into 36 sections. A section is then subdivided into quarter-sections, with an area of 160 acres (64 hectares) each.
