Manitoba is not known for its animal breeding,
at least not until recent years, which are marked by an astonishing
growth in poultry breeding and swine raising.
The raising of dairy cattle has, nevertheless, existed since the
colonisation period and, over the past thirty years, has experienced
major technical transformations. Traditionally, many grain farmers
also practiced some animal husbandry. More recently, though, raising
animals is becoming a highly specialized activity, and has practically
become a rural industry on its own. Mention should be made, however,
of the emergence of alternative animal-breeding farms of a deliberately
smaller size, focused on a so-named natural or biological approach.
